Jim Harrison

There's an irony about this poem that may or may not have been intended by its author. The phrase "Am I a man and a brother?" in the first line is the motto of an extremely famous anti-slavery medal depicting a black man that was created by the potter Josiah Wedgewood as part of the campaign for emancipation in the British empire. Wedgewood was one of Charles Darwin's grandfathers—the other was Erasmus Darwin. Like their grandson, both grandfathers were vehement opponents of slavery, a fact that somehow is never mentioned by Creationists.
