Again from the BFI comes a series of absolutely super urban motion picture landscapes showing bits and pieces of ordinary city life at the turn of the century--I find them exquisite. The first is a movie taken from the front of a horse drawn tram in Belfast, 1901, along Royal Street:

This street scene at Wigan is remarkable for the pure joy of the people who have gathered to be int he film--I particularly like man with his broad-brimmed-hatted daughter on his shoulder towards the end of the film, the father following the camera trying to get his daughter into the film. Just lovely.
