This is the first time that Hamilton's work appeared full flush, following his first exposition to the academy in 1843 and subsequent published notes that appeared in 18 installments in the Philosophical Magazine beginning in 1844. These short articles appeared over the period of 1844-1850, and totaled about 98 pages. Up to the time that the Irish Academy publication appeared in 1847 there were 10 articles published in the PM totaling about 48 pages. (Notes from William Hamilton, "On Quaternions.." in the Phil Mag, edited by David Wilkins (2000), preface, see here.)
