James Chadwick and Etienne Samuel Bieler (1895-1929), “The Collisions of Alpha Particles with Hydrogen Nuclei," (Chadwick and Bieler) pp. 809-825; and bound with James Chadwick and Ernest Rutherford, “On the Artificial Disintegration of Light Elements",pp. 923-939; both papers appearing in the same volume of The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. XLII, 6th Series, 1921, of 1032pp, 27 plates. Bound in cloth. Nice copy, with a little bumping at top and bottom of spine; there is also a library call slip on the front free endpaper, and with no other marks of ownership. $425
Abraham Pais, writing in Inward Bound (pg 240), reviews the Chadwick/Bieler paper and announces that it marks “the birth of strong interactions”
"In 1921, working with E. S. Bieler, (Chadwick) applied the same experimental arrangement to the study of the scattering of alpha particles by hydrogen in sheets of paraffin wax. Using hydrogen gas, Rutherford had already noted discrepancies between theory and experiment; the more sophisticated analysis of Chadwick and Bieler confirmed this, leading them to propose an asymmetric model of the alpha particle" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography)
