“In 1915, Charles-Eugène Guye and Charles Lavanchy measured the deflection of cathode rays at 0.25c–0.5c. They used a tube with a cathode and anode in order to accelerate the rays. A diaphragm at the anode produced a beam which was deflected. A screen was placed at the end of the apparatus, at which the impacts were photographed by a camera. They subsequently computated the ratio of transverse electromagnetic mass mT and rest mass m0 indicated by the red and blue curve, and obtained good agreement with the Lorentz–Einstein formula...supplementing Neumann's result. Neumann's and Guye/Lavanchy's experiments were considered by many as conclusively proving the Lorentz-Einstein formula.--Wikipedia

Tesla's London Lectures, 1892

[Tesla] "Mr. Tesla's Lectures on Alternate Currents of High Potential and Frequency", in Nature, volume 45, February 11, 1892, no. 1163, pp 345-7 in the weekly issue of pp 337-360. Offered with the original wrappers, including the cover plus 7pp of ads. This is extracted from a larger bound volume, ex-library from the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory , with their small oval rubber stamp in the upper corner of the front cover. Its a nice copy though it does have an old, mostly faded, vertical fold through the text.  The article runs around 2500 words and includes two reviews of the lecture(s), which overflow crowds enjoyed over two days at the Royal Institution.  Good, solid copy, with the uncommon wrappers.  $200

Fine copy, very tight and fresh. $500

This volume contains a couple of original articles of interest to the development of nuclear fission as well as 16 articles that are reviewed/abstracted/somewhat reprinted from other journals (in the February, March, and April issues), and when not in French written in or translated into French, which in many cases are the first translations of some of the great papers in this period of nuclear physics. The great majority are one or two columns in length.

Included are works by Thibaud, Savitch, Joliot, Frisch, von Halban, Meitner, Feather, Bretscher, Heyn, Strassmann, Curie and others--these are rapidly published translations/reviews, in many cases coming jsut weeks after the original paper was published.

14 major papers (in 12 different weekly issues) in the history of nuclear fission, all published in Comptes Rendus hebdomadaires des Séances de l'Academie des Sciences, volume 208, January-June 1939, 2250pp, a single bound volume, thick and stout. Ex-libris, with a bookplate--also, each title-page of each weekly issue (of which there are 26 in this volume), has a small round rubber stamp of the library. Cloth binding. ca. 1950. Nice condition.  There is a faded, old vertical fold that extends through the text, no doubt from when the original owner folded the issues in half...over the years in binding, the fold is mostly gone.   $1000

An Early Paper with Extended Bibliography on Special Relativity, 1910

J. Laub, "Uber die experimentellen Grundlagen Relativitatsprinzips, in Jahnrbuch der Radioaktivitat und Elektronik, 1910, volume 7, Leipzig, S. Hirzel, 662pp.  Bound in half calf. Ex-library, U.S. Patent Office. This volume is intact, though has a number if nicks and dings, and is in Fair condition, though perhaps a little better than that.  Uncommon.  $250

Jakob Laub--the first collaborator of Albert Einstein--wrote one of the earliest histories/retrospectives of relativity theory for the Jahrbuch der Radioaktivitat und Electronik in volume 7 for 1910: "Uber die experimentellen Grundlagen des Relativitatsprinzips", pp 405-463. (It seems that I don't often see/notice references on this level citing the first German edition of an integral work in another language, which Laub does here for example in two articles by Fizeau that he found in Annalen when their original publication took place in the Comptes Rendus.)  (See the reference for Laub in Physics Before and After Einstein  edited by M. Mamone Cap; also The Scientist as Philosopher: Philosophical Consequences of Great Scientific ...by F. Weinert.

On Laub, from the Dictionary of Scientific Biography, volume 17:

"Laub attended gymnasium in Rzeszόw. In 1902, after studying briefly at the universities of Cracow and Vienna, he entered the University of Göttingen as a student of mathematics and physics. There, taking courses and seminars with David Hilbert and Hermann Minkowski, he became interested in the electron theory. He turned to experiment, and in 1905 he decided to work with Wilhelm Wien at Würzburg. Laub’s doctoral dissertation (1907) concerned secondary cathode-ray emission. At his oral defense (1906), he introduced Einstein’s special theory of relativity, which Wien had recommended to him in September 1905. For the next several years Laub remained at Würzburg and concentrated on extending Einstein’s ideas."

"Although by early 1908 Einstein was attracting notice from distinguished physicists, he had not yet received a university appointment. It was an unusual step, then, when in February 1908 Laub wrote to Einstein to ask if he could visit Bern to study relativity with him. Laub became Einstein’s first scientific collaborator. Together they published articles criticizing Minkowski’s notion of electromagnetic force and suggesting an experiment to decide between Einstein’s special relativity and Hendrik Lorentz’s electron theory."

A Significant Alteration and Correct in Chasing the Speed of Light (1882)

With a round, black rubber stamp from the Port de Toulon (library or tax stamp, I cannot tell).

This is a report from Michelson correcting an error affecting the performance of the interferometer described and tested in the 1881 paper on ether drag (that appeared in the American Journal of Science", Third series vol. XXII, 1881) leading to the iconic experiments on the speed of light (with Edward Morley beginning in 1885) in 1887 and 1888 (and etc., these preceded by the three efforts of Fizeau, Foucault, and Cornu, as well as Simon Newcomb).

Offered in the full volume of 976pp. Period (? or thereabouts) cloth-backed marbled boards, very sturdily bound. Owner's bookplate, plus five or so 1” rubber stamp owner's marks on title page and a few plates, otherwise this would be a FINE copy. With those stamps being very slightly detracting, an overall VG grade. $450

Prior to using the words “postulate” and “principle” associated with relativity (as in Prinzip der Relativitat” (appearing in the second paragraph of Einstein's June 1905 “Zur Elektrodynamik bewegter Körper” in Annalen der Physik) is first referred to as “relativity theory” (“Relativtheorie”) by Max Planck on p. 756 (col 2 line 9 and also on pp 758+759) of this volume. Then in the “discussion” part of the Planck paper the“theory of relativity” (“Einsteinische Relativitatstheorie”) appears for the first time in print just a few pages later (p. 760 col 2 line 15) by Alfred Bucherer.

There are other papers of relativity in VII including Wacker (p 300), Farkas (p 654), Stark (p 353), and Wilkens (p. 846).

Foley and Wilmer Souder, "Photographing Sound waves", with five photo plates, pp 375-386. Bound in green cloth. Provenance: U.S. Geological Survey, with their bookplate.  Although an ex-library copy, the only markings are the bookplate, a paper "strap" on the front paste down, and an old paper label on the spine. 

Scarce--early issues of the PR are not much around. $150

• Carmichael published at about this same time in 1912 a paper of the same title in the Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society; his book Relativity, published in 1913, is the first book to be published on the subject.
• It looks like the first relativity-related paper appears in the PR in 1908 with Gilbert Lewis "Non-Newtonian Mechanics" , vol 27 p 578. and then in vol 28 again, this time with Lewis writing with Richard Tolman ("Non-Newtonian Mechanics and the principle of Relativity").  There seem to be only seven other papers on relativity in the PR preceding these two. According to Lecat's Bibliographie de la Relativite (1924) there were about 175 papers published worldwide in scientific periodicals on relativity in 1912.
